Hello my lovelies,
How are you all? Good I hope, and hope you're having an amazing summer as well.
So where to start, I'm not quite sure what I just watched to be honest. The Truman Show was definitely an odd film, although slightly amusing in a weird way but at times ever so slightly hard to follow. With Jim Carey playing the lead role as Truman Burbank, that meant there was some great acting, as with most films he appears in. He played Truman's character so well that it allows viewers to empathise with him about the loss of his father and wanting him to find his way out of this strange world that he's been kept in his whole life.
The story line behind this film is that when Truman was born he was an unwanted baby, so a television corporation adopted him and turned him into the star of their new show titled 'The Truman Show'. It was broadcast 24/7 showing those watching everything that Truman ever did and every mile stone of his life. The town of Seahaven that Truman lives in is actually a giant set built under a dome in the L.A area. Everyone that 'lives' there is actually an actor, all playing a different part in Truman's life to keep up appearances and to keep the shows ratings high.
This film is definitely not like other films I have seen before, but I think in a good way. I say I think because I'm still not so sure as its so odd and different, It was weird watching Truman's life being watched by people outside of this television corporation. So by watching this film you are in fact almost watching people watch a reality show but you're also watching his life unfold day to day. See why I said it can be hard to follow?
As you get further into the film it is interesting to watch as Truman slowly starts to realise that his hometown is in face a giant set, and he starts to work out the people around him are actually running on a loop to keep up appearances to Truman so he doesn't get suspicious, although this clearly didn't work too well in the end. Jim Carey does a great job at playing Truman especially as he gets closer to realising everything isn't as it should be. Its almost as if he starts to go slightly crazy realising everything and that adds to the strangeness of the film as well, although it is Jim Carey so you almost start to expect it with films he stars in.
Towards the end of the film you see more of the behind the scenes of the show, we're shown how they control everyone around Truman and the weather which in his early years caused his fear of the sea. Luckily as Truman has realised none of this is real life, he outsmarts the creators in order to escape. However, its not long after this scene that this film becomes one that isn't so good for people who have a fear of deep open water as the creators try their very best to scare Truman into turning back to Seahaven, meaning crazy storms and turning his sail boat over. Thankfully Truman makes it through the storm, finding the very edge of the set under the dome, which he follows to a door marked exit where he can finally leave this fake reality to live his life his way.
Before starting this film I had now idea what I was getting myself into watching. I'd heard things about it but never thought to look it up, until now. To be honest I'm not even sure its one that I would recommend as it was so odd and different, but at the same time I think I did enjoy it and was relieved for Truman when he found his way out. Its Jim Carey's acting that most definitely makes this film what it is, and I'm not sure another actor could pull it off quite the way he does.
If you're into slightly odd, different films then give it a go so that you can see what I mean. Its one of those films that is hard to explain so better to watch it to find out.
So until next time my lovelies, thanks for reading :) x
